Day #5

Today we drove north  from Mouzaki to the Theater at Dion- Sanctuary of Zeus with Mt. Olympus in the background. We met our guide, Barbara, and enjoyed hearing the stories about the Roman conquests in the Macedonian region of Greece. We saw many marble statues from the 1st snd 2nd century AD, tile mosaic from the Hellenistic period, and then walked the grounds of Zeus‘ sanctuary. We learned about the similarities and differences between the Romans and Greeks. Archaeologist are still excavating this area where people like Alexander the Great, the Roman emperor Nero, and even John the Baptist visited. The sanctuary is located at the base of Mount Olympus near the Aegean Sea

The world’s oldest organ

We were able to walk along the pathway where people lived. we learned about the Greek language and the many English words that have Greek roots. We saw where Greeks and Romans attended the theater, and the Roman Bath houses where both Greeks and Romans “did their business”.

After the tour, we headed to a restaurant on the Aegean coast and enjoyed fresh seafood and some outside time  on the rocky beach. Some people jumped in the water, others looked for seashells and skipped rocks, and a few of us played a short pickup game of football.

The highlight of the day for many of us was a hike up a gorge toward Mount Olympus

Around 6 PM, after a great day, we loaded up into the bus and drove further north to our hotel in Thessaloniki.
