Day #9 - Final Day!
Arrived and toured Pompei. Simply amazing. Know for it’s brothels and wine-it was also a central location for trade of breads and meats as it was close to the sea. To learn what happened to this town and how advanced it was in terms of villas, stores, theaters, main square, temples, and infrastructure-all with the volcano in the background looming. Just blows your mind to be able to walk the streets that are over 2,000 years old. Also viewing the frescos was awesome. Some still very much intact after the devastation and being buried for over 1,500 years. Then we trekked over to the Herculaneum
archaeological site. During the same eruption from Mt Vesuvius, this village was frozen in time from effect of the pyroclastic heat of the eruption then the buried by the lava flow. This site was more preserved. You can see more details on the frescos on the walls, the charred remains of where there was wood structures and the replication of where they found human remains. Both sites were a wonder to see and you have to use some imagination to really think how expansive and advanced both cultures were. So humbled to be able to take this all in.
